On leaving school, he found a job at a market where, while serving customers, he kept singing and telling jokes. The owner of the market's poultry section was so impressed with Chubby's performances that he arranged for a songwriter friend to have a recording sent to American Bandstand. As a result, Chubby was on his way to global success.
